Gävle HIF

Founded in January 1970 Gävle HIF (Gävle Handikappades IdrottsFörening) is an association for disabled people who want to play sport on equal terms.

The first chairman was Rolf Henriksson, who at the time was a member of the national association council SHIF (founded in 1969) There 100 members in the first year, which grew to nearly 600 members in the late 1980's. In recent years Gävle HIF has had a membership of between 200-300 people.

Gävle HIF is an assosiation made up of many sections: These include Boccia, Tabletennis, Electronic Shooting, Swimming, Indoor bandy and Skiing. Boccia and Tabletennis have the largest number of active members. It is Gävle HIF´s policy to give our members training at their own level, with activities designed for all handicapped people. The base is physical training for all.

Over the years Gävle HIF has had some very succesful members in different sports. In the 1980's in Electronic Shooting and Boccia we had Swedish Champions. In Tabletennis Mats Pousette is currently on the national team and in Swimming and Skiing our members have won Gold medals at the World championships and Paralympics. These include, in Swimming, brothers Anders and Sten Eriksson who won medals through the 1990's, and in Skiing Åke Pettersson Who was outstanding the blind class during the 1980's and Tor-Björn Ek who continued this winning tradition in the 1990's.
